Stand here with me. The Parrocchia del Sacro Cuore di Gesù stands before us. It is a testament to faith and architectural vision. This church began as a humble vicariate. It was part of the Santissima Trinità parish in 1798. By 1801, it had gained parochial privileges.

Let’s delve into its history. In 1897, Archbishop Andrea Carlo Ferrari visited Milan. He noted the parish’s income was 367.30 lire. The clergy consisted of a pastor and an assistant. There were 1500 parishioners. Several religious groups were active here. They included the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and the Pious Union of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Now, focus on a pivotal moment. The Parrocchia del Sacro Cuore di Gesù officially became a parish on May 24, 1906. Archbishop Ferrari signed the decree. Initially, it was a suburban parish of Porta V. This area included Porta Comasina, Porta Tenaglia, and Porta Volta. A diocesan restructuring occurred between 1971 and 1972. It then became part of the urban vicariate of Cagnola. Now, it resides in the pastoral zone I of Milan.

Consider its architectural significance. The current church design dates from 1906 to 1911. Paolo Mezzanotte designed it. It represents Milanese Eclectic-Liberty architecture. Only the right side of the original building remains. It is incorporated into the present structure.

Notice the unique style. The church embodies a neo-medieval design with a large nave. It measures 36 meters in height, 30 meters in width, and 46 meters in length. Three vaulted bays define the space. Small interconnected side chapels add to its charm. A narrow atrium precedes the nave. The absence of a transept is typical of Capuchin churches.

Pause to appreciate the construction. The extensive groin vaults required innovative engineering. Reinforced concrete and iron were used. These materials were carefully concealed. This preserved the Romanesque character of the architecture.

Observe the facade. It has a distinctive Romanesque-floral style. M. Albertella created the interior painted decorations. This adds to the church’s artistic appeal.

The Parrocchia del Sacro Cuore stands as a symbol of faith and artistic expression. Its history reflects changes in Milan and the enduring power of religious devotion. Its architecture blends different styles. It creates a unique and inspiring space for worship.
