“Water Eaton” whispers the wind. A name echoing through centuries. Right here stands Water Eaton a hamlet nestled between Oxford and Kidlington. Its history stretches back to the 9th century. King Burgred of Mercia once owned this land. The name itself means “farm by a river” a testament to its location beside the River Cherwell.

Water Eaton Manor House is the heart of this place. Built in 1586 for Sir Edward Frere it’s a Grade II* listed building. The renowned Gothic Revival architect GF Bodley restored it in 1890 making it his home. The manor house wasn’t always so grand. It was reduced in size at some point. A testament to the changing fortunes of its owners. But even now its beauty captivates.

Nearby stands a Perpendicular Gothic chapel. Built in 1610 it’s a Grade I listed building. Imagine the villagers attending services there. Their lives interwoven with the manor’s history. Two 17th-century pavilions and a dovecote complete the picture. These structures add to the charm. They hint at a life of leisure and perhaps elegance.

History doesn’t always unfold smoothly. Water Eaton played a pivotal role in the English Civil War. In June 1646 the Articles of Surrender for the siege of Oxford were agreed here. Though the actual signing took place in Oxford’s Audit House. This fact adds intrigue. The surrender agreement concluded the Oxford siege.

Water Eaton’s past is not just stately homes and wars. St Frideswide’s Farmhouse is another important structure. A Tudor stone house it hosted the Lenthall family in the 16th century. It stands now as another testament to the time. The building has been extended several times.

Transport has also shaped Water Eaton. The Buckinghamshire Railway opened in 1850 passing through the parish. Oxford Road Halt existed for a short time. A grain silo was built in 1940 near a disused railway line. It became a landmark. But eventually it was demolished to make way for Oxford Parkway Station in 2013. This area has seen some changes.
