Is it possible to stand on the world’s second longest urban beach? That’s exactly what we are doing at Marina Beach. This natural sandy beach stretches 13 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal. Marina Beach is a Chennai landmark. It attracts thousands of visitors daily.

Before 1640, the sea frequently inundated the land near the coast. When the sea receded, ridges and lagoons remained. The building of Madras harbor near Fort St. George moved the sea about 2.5 km away. This created a wide beach.

Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff, Madras Governor from 1881 to 1886, built the promenade in 1884. He named it Madras Marina. Since then, additions have marked the stretch. The country’s first aquarium was established here in 1909. Post-independence statues like Triumph of Labour and Mahatma Gandhi were erected. Statues of Tamil icons also appeared in 1968. Memorials for Anna, M.G.R., Amma, and Karunanidhi followed.

Marina Beach was once famed for its beauty. However, pollution increased in the 20th century. Today, organizations work to clean Marina Beach and protect its ecosystem. Olive ridley sea turtles nest here. Volunteers protect their nests.

Marina Beach is primarily sandy. It averages 300 meters in width. At its widest, it spans 437 meters. Swimming is prohibited due to turbulent undercurrents. Still, Marina Beach is crowded. It attracts 30,000 visitors on weekdays. Weekends and holidays see about 50,000 visitors.

The beach has shops and food stalls. Memorials and statues dot the landscape. People of all ages enjoy morning walks, jogging, and simply relaxing. Kite flying and beach cricket are popular.

Two swimming pools exist along the stretch. The Marina swimming pool was built in 1947. The Anna swimming pool followed in 1976. An oval skating arena also provides recreation.

In 2005, an artificial waterfall was installed. Cleaning equipment helps maintain the beach. High-mast lamps illuminate the area. About 5,000 people use the Loop Road for morning walks.

Numerous statues and monuments line the Kamaraj Salai promenade. The Victory War Memorial marks the northern end. Memorials honor former chief ministers. Statues of legends like Robert Caldwell and Mahatma Gandhi stand tall.

The other side of the road features historical buildings. These include Chepauk Cricket Stadium and the University of Madras. The Marina Renovation Project improved the beach. Landscaping, seating, and walkways were added. Galleries with seating accommodate over 1,000 people.

Marina Beach has faced safety concerns. Drowning incidents occur due to strong undercurrents. Police and lifeguards patrol the area. Surveillance cameras and watchtowers monitor the beach.

Kannagi statue was removed in 2001 for traffic reasons. Protests followed. It was reinstalled in 2006. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami severely damaged the beachfront.

Marina Beach was the site of the 2017 pro-Jallikattu protests. Many events occur here. Independence Day and Republic Day parades take place. The annual Vinayaka Chathurthi idol immersion happens at Marina Beach.

So rich with history, the Marina Beach is even mentioned in ancient literature. Marina Beach offers a beautiful promenade. It’s a space for recreation and remembrance.
