Deep within the heart of Hanoi, nestled amidst the bustling streets and vibrant energy, lies Đền Kim Liên, a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Đền Kim Liên, also known as Cao Sơn Temple, stands as a testament to Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage. Đền Kim Liên is one of the four sacred temples that once guarded the ancient Thăng Long citadel. It protected the southern gate, while Quan Thanh guarded the north, Bạch Mã the east, and Voi Phục the west. Unlike its counterparts, Đền Kim Liên was constructed later, around the 16th-17th centuries.

The story of Đền Kim Liên begins with a king’s quest to restore his kingdom. King Lê Tương Dực, faced with a formidable revolt, embarked on a journey to reclaim his throne. As he traveled through the Phùng Hoa district, he stumbled upon an ancient temple amidst a serene landscape. This temple, inscribed with the words “Cao Sơn Đại Vương,” or “Lord of High Mountain,” became a sanctuary for the king’s prayers. Legend has it that after ten days of fervent prayer, the king’s campaign was successful, and he regained his rightful place. In gratitude, King Lê Tương Dực commissioned the construction of a temple dedicated to Cao Sơn. Initially built in the Phùng Hoa district, the temple was later relocated and rebuilt in the Kim Hoa ward in 1509. It grew in size and grandeur, becoming the Đền Kim Liên we see today.

The temple’s architecture reflects traditional Vietnamese design, featuring intricate carvings and vibrant colors. The main entrance, Nghi Môn, leads to the Đại Bái, the central worshiping hall. Behind the Đại Bái lies the Cung Cấm, the innermost sanctuary. Here, you’ll find the statues of Cao Sơn Đại Vương, alongside the son and daughter of King Lê, and Huệ Minh Công Chúa. Among the temple’s most treasured artifacts is a stone stele. This stele, inscribed in 1510, tells the story of Cao Sơn’s intervention in King Lê’s struggle. It stands as a tangible link to the temple’s origins and the legend it embodies. In addition to the stele, there are 39 imperial edicts. These documents, issued over centuries, conferred titles upon Cao Sơn, solidifying his status as a protector of the realm.

Đền Kim Liên is not merely a historical relic. It is a living, breathing space that continues to hold great significance for the local community. Each year, the temple hosts a vibrant festival on the 15th and 16th days of the third lunar month. This celebration, filled with rituals, performances, and traditional games, is a testament to the enduring reverence for Cao Sơn. As you explore Đền Kim Liên, take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere, the intricate details of the architecture, and the stories whispered through the ages. This sacred space, once a guardian of the ancient citadel, remains a place of peace, spirituality, and remembrance.
