Could a temple disappear and then reappear? The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishnan Temple in Nanganallur whispers just such a tale. This temple, nestled in the growing suburbs of Chennai, stands as a testament to resilience and rediscovery. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a palimpsest of history, where layers of time reveal a story of devotion spanning centuries. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishnan Temple isn’t merely a modern structure. It’s built upon the remnants of an ancient temple, possibly pre-Pallava, dating back over 1,500 years. Archaeological surveys have unearthed captivating artifacts. A five-and-a-half-foot stone image of Lord Narayana, sculpted in the distinct Pallava style, hints at the temple’s rich past. An image of Goddess Bhu Devi, accompanied by a bell, plate, and lamp, adds another layer to the narrative. This bell is unique. The images of Sudarshana (Lord Vishnu’s discus) and Panchajanya (His conch) are inlaid within each other on the handle’s top, a departure from the usual side-by-side placement. The main deity here is Lord Lakshmi Narasimha. But Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishnan Temple also houses shrines for other deities. These include Sri Chakrattazhvar, Sri Vishvaksena, Swami Nammazhvar, Sri Ramanuja, and Sri Vedanta Desika. Another significant shrine is dedicated to Lord Navaneetha Krishna. Here, the deity holds a ball of butter in his right hand and a conch in his left. Interestingly, this shrine is octagonal, perhaps reflecting Lord Krishna being the eighth child of Vasudev and Devaki. The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishnan Temple complex also features a shrine for Lord Srinivasa, a gift from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, guarded by a tall dvajastambha. The temple’s rediscovery story is itself remarkable. In the 1970s, during the temple’s reconstruction, these artifacts were discovered, along with an inscription detailing a land gift for temple lamps. This rediscovery led to the temple’s consecration in 1975, breathing new life into an ancient place of worship. The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Navaneetha Krishnan Temple stands as a symbol of continuity and devotion, a place where the whispers of the past resonate in the present.
