“Bloop bloop bloop” The rhythmic sound of a coffee pot once punctuated the silent prayers at La Cañada United Methodist Church. Can you imagine? This wasn’t always a stately building.
La Cañada United Methodist Church boasts a rich history. It began humbly in 1964. Services were held in a surprisingly makeshift setup. A fold-up pulpit and a supply trailer served as the initial sanctuary at Paradise Canyon Elementary School. Founding pastor John Knox recalled the unique charm of this temporary space. The coffee pot’s cheerful gurgle became part of the worship experience. He jokingly attributed the sound to the Holy Spirit.
The church’s early years were marked by simple beginnings and strong community spirit. Active members numbered around 120. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2014. Bishop Minerva Carcaño the first Hispanic female bishop of the Southern California Hawaii Guam and Saipan United Methodist Conference attended the jubilee. The event included a worship service a luncheon and storytelling.
Today La Cañada United Methodist Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith of its congregation. It’s a place of close-knit fellowship and spiritual growth. Pastor Elaine Cho who came in 2011 appreciates the church’s intimate nature. She values the loving community fostered within its walls. Longtime member Heidi Moreno speaks of the church as an extended family. It played a significant role in her life and continues to guide her faith journey.
