Gleaming gold under the Bruneian sun the majestic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque stands. It’s not actually the Serdang Mosque but a similar architectural marvel. We are here to talk about the Serdang Mosque though. I wish I could share more. I simply don’t have the necessary information about the Serdang Mosque. This magnificent structure before us however offers a glimpse into Brunei’s rich Islamic heritage. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque was completed in 1958. It cost a staggering $5 million USD. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III commissioned the mosque. It’s named in his honour. The mosque reflects Mughal architectural styles. It’s a stunning blend of styles. The design incorporates elements of Brunei’s culture too. The gold dome is a striking feature. It’s visible across the city skyline. The mosque sits on a man-made lagoon. A ceremonial barge sits in the lagoon. This adds to the mosque’s charm. Inside Italian marble adorns the walls. Rugs from Saudi Arabia decorate the floors. The mosque holds up to 3000 worshippers. It’s a key site for prayer and royal events. The Sultan’s own concepts formed the basis of the mosque’s design. Draughtsman Haji Besar bin Sagap put those concepts down on paper. Initially the mosque was to be at Padang Besar. For the convenience of the Kampong Ayer people the Sultan changed its location. This reflects the Sultan’s care for his people. The construction involved 1500 tons of concrete and 700 tons of steel. Foundation piles measured between 80 and 120 feet. It took five years to build. The Sultan officially opened the mosque in 1958. This coincided with his 42nd birthday celebration. Hassan Azhari sang the call to prayer. The opening was attended by many dignitaries. It was the first news reported over Brunei’s radio. Many significant events have taken place at the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. This includes royal weddings and national prayers. The mosque underwent renovation in 1994. This involved installing air conditioning and special glass windows. The mosque remains a powerful symbol of Brunei. It blends its past with the present beautifully. So while we’re not at the Serdang Mosque it’s clear Brunei’s architectural heritage is one of magnificent beauty and spiritual significance.
