This was in a different location on East 74th Street. The congregation later became known as the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church. This was named for the famed Bohemian priest and reformer Jan Hus. The church’s motto “Truth Prevails” reflects Hus’s legacy.
The original church building was quite something. Designed by R H Robertson it was a beautiful example of Bohemian Gothic Revival architecture. It opened its doors in 1888. But the church wasn’t merely a place of worship. It was a vibrant hub of community life. The Jan Hus Neighborhood House was a vital part of this. It promoted music theater and culture. It even operated a homeless outreach program.
And then there’s the theater. A 150-seat gem in the church basement. It hosted countless performances. From Gilbert and Sullivan groups to the legendary Chicago City Limits comedy troupe. Barbra Streisand even appeared there in her first New York role. The theater’s history is as rich and diverse as the city itself. A testament to the church’s commitment to the arts and its community.
In 2019 the church moved. The congregation sold its historic building to acquire a more modern facility. This better suited their growing community outreach missions. Their new home on First Avenue is a testament to their ongoing commitment. This is to their community. To justice and to faith. Avenue Church NYC continues to serve. It continues to inspire.
