How did Foothill High School earn the motto: Falcons – Soaring Above and Beyond to a New Level of Excellence? Foothill High School opened its doors on August 23, 1999. There were 93 faculty and staff members. The school started with 1268 students.
Today Foothill has over 150 faculty and staff members. They serve 2300 students. Foothill is proud to be the pinnacle of the OneHill group of schools. These elementary and middle schools feed into Foothill. They provide a sense of community for students. Students progress toward graduation from Foothill.
The academic and elective courses offered at Foothill allow students to fulfill graduation requirements. They ensure students are college and career-ready. Foothill’s core academic programs align with the Nevada Academic Content Standards. The elective courses allow students to choose a program of study. This program can lead them to a career pathway. Students may earn college credit for free. This is through Career and Technical Education Programs. Foothill also has a robust partnership with the University of Nevada Reno’s Collegiate Academy. Here students can earn college credit in many courses.
Students are encouraged to participate in student activities. They should also take advantage of athletic programs. These are offered at Foothill High School. Foothill High School is committed to meeting the district, state, and national educational standards. This is for all students.
Foothill High School’s mission is dedication. The school is dedicated to creating a safe and challenging environment. It prepares students for the academic, behavioral, and social demands of their post-graduate life. Foothill High School’s vision is that all students graduate prepared. They are prepared to succeed and contribute to a diverse global society.
Foothill High School’s Belief Statements were developed by students, staff, and parents. They reflect the diverse school community. The school believes all students can learn. It believes all students can earn a diploma. Also it believes all students can be successful after high school.
Foothill also operates a student-run news station. It mirrors a real-world TV station. The program launched in 2001. Karen Vaughan and student Matt Mayhood developed it. Mayhood returned to teach the program in 2012. He had worked at various television stations. They provide a daily broadcast to students. It includes news and happenings around campus. FST News works with the police departments of Henderson, Boulder City and Clark County. They produce Every 15 Minutes.
Foothill’s Marching Band is the largest in Nevada history. It broke state records in 2010. They made Finals in two Bands of America competitions in California and Utah. The band has made Band of America Regional Finals several times. As of right now, they are one of four bands across the country. They help TAMA test their new drums.
The Marching Band has participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. In May 2012, the band marched in the National Memorial Parade in Washington DC. In December 2012 the Foothill Drumline participated in the Very Vegas Holiday at The Smith’s Center. They performed with the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra. The Foothill Drumline also performed with Trace Adkins at the American Country Awards. This was nationally televised on Fox. The Marching Band performed in the Macy’s Day Parade in 2014. The Drumline captured sixth place at the WGI World Championship Finals in 2015.
In baseball, Foothill won the 4A state title. It was the first in school history. That happened in 2023.
Lisa Cano Burkhead served as principal. She served from 2015 to 2021. She became the 36th Lieutenant Governor of Nevada.
Foothill High School truly embodies its motto. The Falcons soar above and beyond to a new level of excellence. It achieves this in academics, arts, and athletics.
