Before this impressive building stood a humble Lateinschule a testament to the town’s early commitment to learning. Established after the Reformation it laid the groundwork for future generations of scholars. Imagine the quill scratching across parchment the murmur of Latin lessons filling the air. This school closed in 1821. For forty-one years only an elementary school existed in its place.
Then in 1862 a Realschule opened its doors on Schulstrasse 22. This was a significant moment. It marked a shift towards more practical subjects a move away from the pure classical focus of the old Lateinschule. It even briefly combined with the elementary school. Yet the town’s ambitions were higher. They tried to establish a Realprogymnasium but lacked the financial backing. A similar attempt to allow girls into the school in 1885 failed due to the prevalent ban on co-education and the existence of a separate girls’ school.
Progress continued however. A new six-class Realschule opened in 1910 becoming an Oberrealschule just six years later. The town commissioned a brand new school building. Franz Thyriot a Frankfurt architect won the competition. His design opened in 1913 accommodating 290 students in nine classrooms a massive step forward. This building which continues to shape the landscape of the Gymnasium today is a symbol of ambition and forward-thinking education.
The school’s journey isn’t without its twists and turns. It underwent changes and transformations reflecting broader educational trends. It became a co-educational institution. It even became a Gesamtschule in 1972 embracing a more comprehensive approach to education. But the winds of change blew once again. After a 1987 state election the school reverted to its Gymnasium format in 1988. The secondary and high school levels moved to the nearby Erich-Kästner-Schule. The Gymnasium Oberursel we know today was reborn.
Today the Gymnasium Oberursel is a vibrant institution. It boasts special music classes a bilingual branch and a strong focus on STEM subjects.
