Have you ever seen a playground made of concrete sea creatures? Welcome to Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel California. This isn’t just any park. It’s home to La Laguna de San Gabriel also known as Dinosaur Park or Monster Park. This amazing playground is one of nine of America’s coolest playgrounds. It features fourteen concrete play structures. These structures were created by Mexican-American artist Benjamin Dominguez. Minnie the whale Stella the starfish Ozzie the octopus and three dolphins are just a few of the playful creatures.

Vincent Lugo Park is the largest park in San Gabriel. It’s much more than just La Laguna. The park also includes a lighted youth baseball diamond a youth multi-purpose athletic field picnic tables barbecues restrooms and even a Girl Scout House. The park’s history is fascinating. In 1965 Vincent Lugo was the parks supervisor. He was instrumental in transforming a city landfill into this beautiful park. His contributions were so significant that the park was renamed in his honor in 1988.

The story of La Laguna itself is a testament to community spirit. Around 2006 the city planned to demolish the playground deeming it unsafe. But local residents weren’t ready to let it go. The Friends of La Laguna group formed. They fought tirelessly to save La Laguna. They commissioned a Historic Structures Report and Preservation Plan. This led to La Laguna being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. The park closed for renovations from 2011 to 2012. It reopened better than ever.

The park underwent extensive renovations. The Friends of La Laguna raised almost $700000 for this. They received support from many groups. The Annenberg Foundation and Los Angeles County Supervisors helped. La Laguna stands as a tribute to its creator. It celebrates community activism and the preservation of a unique piece of art. This is a truly special place. It’s a reminder that even landfills can be transformed into treasures. A place where generations of children have played. A place where community spirit shines.
