Time stood still. The imposing silhouette of the Ev-Luth St Johannes Gemeinde in Frankfurt am Main rose before us. Its story whispered from every stone.

This grand Baroque hall church isn’t just a pretty face. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of Bornheim a Frankfurt district since 1474. Its history stretches far beyond its current form. It began as a small chapel around 750. Dedicated to the martyrs Abdon and Sennen it was repeatedly repaired and expanded.

Imagine a bustling medieval village. The original late Gothic church stood here. By 1663 it needed expansion. A northern extension widened it by 15 meters. The graveyard lay to the south preventing expansion there. The old tower was demolished then rebuilt. Finished on December 23 1751 it was a vital part of the community.

Then tragedy struck. On July 17 1776 lightning ignited a devastating fire. The church burned to its stone walls. Undeterred the community rebuilt. In 1778-79 Stadtbaumeister Johann Andreas Liebhardt laid the foundation for the current church. Using the remaining walls they created a larger late Baroque structure. Dedicated on October 10 1779 it showcased resilience.

A unique detail. In 1781 the St Johannes Gemeinde became one of the first buildings in Frankfurt with lightning rods. Professor Hemmer from Mannheim designed them. Frankfurt’s master locksmith Alb crafted them protecting the church from future fires.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the church faced further trials. Renovations in 1896 gave it the name St Johannes Church. World War II brought destruction again. On December 11 1944 bombs severely damaged the church. Its windows and ceiling painting were destroyed. Yet the community rose again dedicating it once more on May 23 1948.

More challenges followed. Groundwater lowering caused the tower to lean. In 1978-1980 a remarkable feat was accomplished. They separated the tower from the nave. They sunk over 10-meter-long concrete piles to stabilize the structure. The church then underwent a complete interior renovation.

The St Johannes Gemeinde received a new organ in 2009. Crafted by Karl Schuke Berliner Orgelbauwerkstatt it uses some pipes from the old Walcker organ. A 2014 renovation lightened the interior replaced the pews with chairs and redesigned the altar area. The windows were also updated keeping the original four Evangelists medallions.

Today the St Johannes Gemeinde stands proudly. Its spire a landmark in Bornheim. Falcons nest in its tower their lives intertwined with the church’s history. A place of worship a symbol of community and a living testament to faith’s enduring power. It invites you to step inside to feel its history and the community that it unites.
