Trinity Church a towering presence on Broadway stands before you. Its Gothic Revival architecture speaks of centuries past. This isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to New York City’s history.

Trinity Church boasts a rich and storied past. Its current structure is the third iteration. The first a modest rectangular building faced the Hudson River. It was built in 1698. Sadly it perished in the Great Fire of 1776. A second church replaced it facing Wall Street. It was consecrated in 1790 and served as a place of worship for prominent figures including George Washington. Severe snowstorms weakened the second church. It was eventually demolished making way for the present magnificent structure.

Construction on the third and current Trinity Church began in 1839. It was completed in 1846. At the time it was the tallest building in the United States. This impressive feat held until 1869. It remained the tallest in New York City until 1890. Architect Richard Upjohn designed the church. His Gothic Revival style is instantly recognizable. Later Frederick Clarke Withers added a reredos and altar. This was a memorial to William Backhouse Astor Sr. He also extended the rear of the church.

Trinity Church has witnessed pivotal moments in American history. It served as a sanctuary during the Revolutionary War. It stood as a beacon of hope after the September 11th attacks. St Paul’s Chapel a chapel of Trinity Church became a refuge for first responders and volunteers. It offered food medical care and spiritual comfort. The church’s resilience mirrors the spirit of New York City itself.

Today Trinity Church continues its mission. It provides worship services community outreach and artistic programs. Its impressive collection of bells includes a ring of 12 change-ringing bells.
