From a sleepy Dutch village named Middleburgh to the bustling heart of Queens, Elmhurst has worn many names and even more faces. Elmhurst is a place where the echoes of history mingle with the vibrant pulse of immigrant life. Elmhurst is located in western Queens. The name “Elmhurst” itself, adopted in 1896, hints at a quieter past, “a grove of elms.” This was a deliberate attempt to distinguish the burgeoning community from the industrial grime of Newtown Creek and attract new residents. The plan worked. Developer Cord Meyer Jr. saw the potential and began building homes, shaping what we see today. Elmhurst became a desirable residential area, expanding to include Elmhurst Square, Elmhurst South, Elmhurst Heights, and New Elmhurst. Before World War II, Elmhurst was largely Italian and Jewish. The post-war era brought a wave of new immigrants, transforming Elmhurst into a microcosm of the world. Today, over 112 nationalities call Elmhurst home. This diversity is reflected in the vibrant tapestry of shops and restaurants along Queens Boulevard. From the aroma of spices in the bustling Chinese markets to the tempting smells from Korean, Mexican, and Indian restaurants, Elmhurst is a feast for the senses. This ethnic diversity makes Elmhurst a popular filming location. Remember the hilarious McDowell’s restaurant from “Coming to America”? That Wendy’s, disguised as a McDonald’s competitor, was right here in Elmhurst, later replaced by condos. Elmhurst is also a place of historical significance. It was the childhood home of Archie Bunker actor, Carroll O’Connor, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and comedian Don Rickles. They grew up alongside everyday New Yorkers in this middle-income, working-class neighborhood. Elmhurst has its quirks too. For years, New Yorkers knew the Elmhurst Gas Tanks as a notorious traffic bottleneck on the Long Island Expressway. These towering structures were eventually dismantled and replaced by Elmhurst Park. From gas tanks to green space, Elmhurst continues to evolve, embracing its past while looking toward the future. Elmhurst is a testament to the power of change and the enduring spirit of community.
