On the hill of Hall of Fame Terrace stands University Heights Presbyterian Church. It has a long and colorful history. University Heights Presbyterian Church began with a meeting. This meeting addressed the religious needs of the locality. Rev W.L. Waite, Prof J.J. Stevenson, and Dr. Joseph S. Taylor met on November 26, 1893. They followed the call of Counselor Henry M. MacCracken. He was a clergyman and educator.
A Sunday School was organized on December 7, 1893. By the end of 1894, interest grew. Preaching services were held. The congregation voted for a Presbyterian connection on December 4, 1899. The organization of the Church occurred on April 15, 1900. Henry M. MacCracken acted as minister. He also created the plan of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. The hall was established as an educational agency. It became a shrine for patriotic remembrance.
The first service in the new sanctuary took place on Christmas Sunday. That was December 25, 1907. The first Men’s Club was established in 1914. It was called Men Fellowship. The Board of Deacons was created in 1915.
The organ was presented on November 15, 1925. It provides music every Sunday morning to this day. In the 70s, a Day Care Center opened at University Heights Presbyterian Church. It served the community’s needs.
University Heights Presbyterian Church has a vision. It wants to be a faithful people. They are thankful to God for salvation through Christ Jesus. The church is centered in worship. It proclaims the Living Word. It demonstrates God’s love. This love is shown through service. They serve each other, their church, their community, their city, and their world.
The mission of University Heights Presbyterian Church is clear. It aims to be a beacon of light on the hill. They grow in grace and in faith. They extend healing and helping hands. This happens through spiritual enrichment opportunities. They edify and build up the Body of Christ. They equip the saints to do the work of God internally and externally. This includes spiritual practice.
University Heights Presbyterian Church strives to be diverse. They are empowered and unified by the Holy Spirit. They are one Body in Christ Jesus. They seek to uphold justice and peace. Others may know they are Christians. They work, worship, and fellowship together. They invite and draw others to Christ.
The goal of University Heights Presbyterian Church is simple. They want to be united. They aim to be helpful. They want to be productive. They strive to be caring. For they are University Heights Presbyterian Church.
Today, University Heights Presbyterian Church continues its work. It offers various ministries. These ministries include bible study. Prayer takes place with Rev. Lonnie Bryant on Wednesdays. They also have children and youth ministries. These feature trips, games, and pizza nights.
Adult and family ministries are also available. University Heights Presbyterian Church hosts a quarterly bazaar. They have a choir every Wednesday. Grace Fellowship meets three Sundays a month. They have social outings and theatre visits. A men’s study group meets bi-monthly. They prepare care boxes for shelters monthly. The church holds an annual VA visit. They also treat veterans at the quarterly bazaar.
