“Whispers of centuries past,” I begin, my voice low, “are held within these walls.” We stand before the Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg, a modern structure belying the ancient stories it protects. The Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg isn’t just a building. It’s a keeper of secrets, a guardian of history. It houses the archives of the Archdiocese of Freiburg, a diocese formed in 1827. The Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg, as we know it today, began its life interwoven with the diocese’s own. Initially, the documents and records were simply part of the diocesan registry. In 1828, the idea of a dedicated archive was first mentioned, though it remained just that, an idea.

The transformation began in 1859. Franz Zell, then registrar, was appointed archivist and started separating the historical documents from the everyday paperwork. This marked the true birth of the Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg. However, it wasn’t until 1967, with the appointment of Dr. Franz Hundsnurscher, the first trained archivist, that the archive began operating under modern archival methods. The archive then moved to an annex of the Ordinariate in Herrenstraße in 1974. This location, however, proved unsuitable. Limited space and unfavorable climate conditions, particularly the humidity and resulting mold, threatened the precious documents.

The need for a dedicated, modern facility became clear. Thus, the current building on Schoferstraße, designed by architect Christof Hendrich in collaboration with the Erzbischöfliches Bauamt Freiburg, was inaugurated in 2002. This new structure, opened by Archbishop Oskar Saier, features a unique climate control system inspired by Roman hypocaust wall heating, minimizing energy consumption while preserving the archive’s treasures. Within its walls, the Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg holds more than just the history of the Freiburg diocese. It also preserves records from the diocese’s predecessors: Konstanz, Strasbourg, Speyer, Worms, Mainz, and Würzburg. These collections, known as Bestand A, form the historical core of the archive.

The records of the Freiburg diocesan administration, Bestand B, provide invaluable insights into the cultural and architectural history of Baden and Hohenzollern. The Erzbischöfliches Archiv Freiburg holds a treasure trove of genealogical information in the form of church books. These records, documenting baptisms, marriages, and deaths before the introduction of official civil registers in the late 19th century, are available for research via microfilm.
