The path to creating Junior High School 231 Playground wasn’t easy. It took an interfund transfer. A $100000 Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology grant also helped. Senator Peter B. Harckham’s office provided this grant. Lisa Herlihy, Assistant Superintendent for Business, said they wanted to provide an inclusive playground for many years.
Special education teacher Peter Iannarelli shared that his students have been using the playground during their lunch periods. Kathy King, a special education teacher aide, sees many happy smiles there.
But the upgrades didn’t stop at the playground itself. The theater entrance got a makeover too. A walkway made of two-toned pavers welcomes families. Native trees line the path. The upgraded entrance ensures that people of all ages will enjoy the playground. They might even check out the wobble chairs before heading inside for school events.
