Can you hear the whispers of history echoing around us? Here, at the First Presbyterian Church, also known as “Old First,” stories of faith, revolution, and architectural brilliance intertwine. First Presbyterian Church has stood as a beacon of faith and resilience in New York City for centuries. Its journey began in 1716 on Wall Street, where the first congregation gathered for worship. Their first sanctuary, built in 1719, witnessed the growth of the church and the burgeoning influence of the Scots in the city. James Anderson, the first pastor, ministered to the growing Scots population.

First Presbyterian Church soon earned the moniker “Church of Patriots” during the American Revolution. Many congregants actively participated in the fight against British rule. Their pastor, John Rodgers, was a fervent patriot who had to flee the city during the British occupation. The British seized the church, using it as barracks, stables, and even a prison. The church’s role in the revolution solidified its place in the city’s history.

In 1846, the congregation moved uptown to its current location on Fifth Avenue, encouraged by James Lenox, a prominent elder. The new sanctuary, designed by Joseph C. Wells, is a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. Wells drew inspiration from the Church of St. Saviour in Bath, England, and Magdalen Tower in Oxford. The south transept, added in 1893, was designed by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White. The church’s stained-glass windows, crafted by artists like Louis Comfort Tiffany, add a touch of elegance. They flood the sanctuary with vibrant colors.

In 1918, First Presbyterian merged with two other congregations, creating a “Presbyterian cathedral.” Harry Emerson Fosdick became the pastor in that same year. His charismatic sermons drew large crowds. His liberal theology sparked the “Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy.” His famous sermon, “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?”, delivered from the pulpit of First Presbyterian Church, ignited a national debate.

The church complex includes the South Wing, a Gothic Revival parish house. The Mellin Macnab building, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentice, Edgar Tafel, stands as a testament to modern design, harmoniously blending with the older structures. Two impressive pipe organs, built by Sebastian M. Glück, fill the sanctuary with rich sounds. The larger organ, a massive four-manual instrument, is a true symphonic masterpiece.

First Presbyterian Church has been more than just a place of worship. It has been a witness to history, a platform for social change, and a symbol of enduring faith. As you stand before this magnificent structure, imagine the countless lives that have been touched within these walls. Consider the echoes of sermons that have challenged and inspired. First Presbyterian Church continues to be a vital part of New York City’s spiritual landscape.
