What secrets lie hidden behind the seemingly ordinary walls of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium? This unassuming building, tucked away in the heart of Düsseldorf’s Gerresheim district, houses a rich history spanning over half a century. The Marie-Curie-Gymnasium, established in 1962, was originally a girls’ school, a counterpart to the all-boys Gymnasium Gerresheim founded in 1947. It wasn’t until 1970 that both schools embraced co-education. However, echoes of their segregated past linger. The Marie-Curie-Gymnasium retains a focus on arts and languages, attracting more female students. In contrast, the Gymnasium Gerresheim leans towards science and technology, drawing a larger male population. Throughout the years, the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium has continuously evolved. It boasts a state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, including a new sports field built in 2005 and a four-court sports hall opened in 2007. Notably, the school grounds house the state performance center for rhythmic gymnastics. Fast forward to 2012, the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium celebrated its 50th anniversary. The celebrations marked a milestone in the school’s journey. But the story doesn’t end there. In October 2023, the school inaugurated a new extension, breathing new life into the space. This modern addition houses classrooms, as well as dedicated art and music rooms. The ground floor features a welcoming canteen with a spacious terrace. And if you think the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium rests on its laurels, think again! Extensive renovations were completed in the summer of 2024. The Marie-Curie-Gymnasium is a testament to the enduring power of education and its constant evolution.
