“Lost souls seeking solace,” whispered the wind as it danced around the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde stands on the corner of Rua do Heroísmo and Rua da Formiga. This small chapel, adorned with blue azulejo tiles, holds more than a century of stories within its walls. The year 1810 is etched above the door, possibly marking a reconstruction rather than its origin. Two azulejo panels, likely added later, depict Nossa Senhora da Saúde and a crucified Christ, flanking a grated window. The chapel’s triangular peak proudly displays a clock. Oval “oculi” with wrought ironwork grace the lower part of the facade, inviting light into the sanctuary. A bell tower completes the structure on the right. Originally, a marker near the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde separated the parishes of Santo Ildefonso and Campanhã. In 1869, the chapel’s administrators requested the Senhor da Piedade crucifix from a small oratory on Rua do Loureiro. Their request was granted, and the crucifix found a new home within the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde. Festivities for Senhor da Piedade and Senhora das Dores, also venerated at the chapel, were documented in 1891. Decorations adorned the streets from Prado do Repouso to the mansion of Barão do Valado on Rua do Freixo, near the chapel. The chapel underwent many renovations. In 1899, a new tower was added, thanks to the efforts of Maximino Gomes da Fonseca, the secretary of the chapel’s confraternity. Barão do Valado later donated a near life-size statue of Santa Luzia in 1903. The Rua do Heroísmo, once part of the route from São Lázaro to Campanhã, has borne several names. After the Siege of Porto and the battle of September 29, 1832, it became Rua 29 de Setembro. Later, it was renamed Rua do Heroísmo to honor the outnumbered liberal fighters. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde may have sheltered the wounded from this very battle. A curious detail of this area is the “Pedra da Audiência” or “Audience Stone.” This stone, once located on public land, marked the spot where residents held council meetings. It was moved in 1835. Although its current location is unknown, these stones symbolized local autonomy in administering justice. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde, also known as Capela do Senhor do Padrão or Capela da Formiga, offers a glimpse into Porto’s rich past. From its humble beginnings to its role in the city’s history, the chapel stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
