Defense was paramount in the Joseon Dynasty. This very Fortress Wall of Seoul stands as a testament. King Taejo ordered its construction in 1395. Its purpose was clear: to protect the capital from invaders. The wall stretched almost 19 kilometers around central Seoul. It followed the natural contours of four mountains. These mountains were Baegak, Naksan, Namsan and Inwangsan.

Imagine the bustle of activity. Over 100,000 people mobilized to build it in January 1396. This massive project was essential to defend Hanyang. Hanyang later evolved into the Seoul we know today. The Seoul City Wall marked the boundary of the capital. It separated the downtown area from the outskirts.

The wall’s history can be divided into three major periods of fortification. These were during the 14th, 15th, and 18th centuries. Initially, the walls were made of medium sized round stones. Mud held them together. Later, King Sejong ordered a large scale refurbishment. Earthen sections were replaced with rectangular stone sections. King Sukjong completed a major restoration in 1704. He rebuilt sections using large uniform stone slabs.

Eight gates once punctuated the Fortress Wall of Seoul. They controlled entry into the city. Six of these gates can still be seen today. The gates were built between 1396 and 1398. Each gate had a unique name and purpose.

Emile Bourdartet a French engineer, once walked the entire length of the wall. He worked in Korea around 1900. He said it was a very interesting walkway. Much of the Seoul City Wall was destroyed during the Japanese colonial era. The Korean War also caused damage. However, extensive renovations have restored over 70 percent of the original structure.

A stroll along the Fortress Wall of Seoul offers spectacular views. The path from Hyehwamun to Naksan Park is particularly beautiful. Here, the wall blends into the landscape. Naksan Park itself is a hidden gem. It has observation points and lush footpaths.

The eastern section of the Seoul City Wall was more vulnerable. It was on lower ground. A lookout was added to reinforce the defense. Beacon mounds were also part of the defense system. Signals could be sent across the country. Smoke by day and fire by night alerted the Royal Palace to any danger. One fire meant normalcy. Five fires signaled a battle.
