Deep in the heart of rural Portugal, overlooking the Tamega River valley, stands the Capela de Parada de Atei. This chapel isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of centuries past. The Capela de Parada de Atei is a longitudinal church, a structure of five distinct volumes. These sections, the nave, the low side chapels, the raised chancel, and the sacristy, fit together like pieces of a historical puzzle. Each section is roofed differently, with dual-pitched roofs covering the main areas and a triple-pitched roof sheltering the sacristy. The western facade of the Capela de Parada de Atei greets you with a simple, yet elegant portal. Two archivolts, decorated with sawtooth patterns, circles, and meanders, frame the entrance. Look closely, and you’ll see corbels hinting at a former porch. Above, a bell tower rises from the truncated gable, topped by a Latin cross. The north and south facades of the Capela de Parada de Atei hold more secrets. They feature simple portals, adorned with similar decorations to the main entrance, but with added human figures. A cornice, supported by smooth corbels, runs along these sides. The chancel’s back wall boasts a molded cornice, Tuscan pilasters, and another Latin cross. Inside the Capela de Parada de Atei, light streams in through a window above the main entrance. High, rectangular windows illuminate the nave and chancel. Smaller windows grace the side chapels, casting a gentle glow on the altars within. The nave and chapels have wooden, dual-pitched ceilings, while the chancel boasts a curved ceiling. A plain, perfect arch marks the triumphal arch. The chancel’s altar is a masterpiece of painted and gilded woodwork. The Capela de Parada de Atei has seen many changes. Originally built perhaps as early as the 14th century, the Capela dos Condes was added in the 16th century. This addition was commissioned by the House of Cantanhede to house a stone image of Our Lady of Conception, found in the ruins of their palace in Atei. The chancel and side chapels likely appeared in the 19th century. In 1997, the interior underwent a significant restoration. A high choir and two neoclassical altarpieces were removed to reveal the original Romanesque style. The Capela de Parada de Atei sits near the rectory and a square bell tower. This tower has a rectangular tank with tubular spouts, topped by a corbel bearing a Roman numeral inscription and the image of Saint Peter. A stone staircase on the back leads to the belfry. Nearby, you’ll find the Centenários Cross, a residential house, and several historical buildings, each with its own story to tell. The Capela de Parada de Atei stands as a testament to time, faith, and the enduring spirit of this tranquil corner of Portugal.
