From its humble beginnings on Hudson Street in 1925 the Linwood Church of Christ has journeyed through Detroit’s vibrant history. This unassuming building at 14001 Linwood Street stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community.
Linwood Church of Christ wasn’t always here. Its first worship service took place on Hudson Street. The congregation then moved to Willard School. Later they settled into a storefront before finding their first permanent home on Ford Avenue. This was where Brother James Stewart became the church’s first full-time minister. The name changed later.
The church’s journey involved many ministers. Brother Zebedee Bishop served twice. He played a pivotal role in the church’s development. After fundraising efforts Brother Zebedee Bishop Brother Walter Balloon Sr and Brother Jessie Bishop Sr oversaw the groundbreaking of the current location in May 1975. The congregation moved into this building on Mother’s Day 1976. They paid off their mortgage in December 1989 a significant milestone.
Growth brought challenges. The rapid increase in members under Brother James Mark Thompson led to services being held at the Shiner Theater. This was temporary while awaiting the construction of a larger building on Dexter Avenue. Unfortunately plans changed. The late 1990s were a time of transition. The Linwood Church of Christ saw some members leave to form a new church. Others returned to the Linwood location.
Through the years many individuals dedicated themselves to Linwood. They served as ministers elders and deacons. The church navigated changes in leadership and faced hardships like the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic impacted worship services. The church adapted using online platforms for services and communion distribution.
Despite challenges Linwood Church of Christ persevered. The church continues to serve as a place of worship and community support. Donale Stewart and Damon Harney currently lead as ministers. Samuel Black Stanley Davidson and Henry Capers serve as trustees. The Linwood Church of Christ’s story is one of resilience. It’s a story of faith community and enduring hope in the heart of Detroit.
