The Calcutta Bungalow was once the grand townhouse of the Majumdar family. Sadly it fell into disrepair. Bare walls cracked windows and broken frames marked its decline. Yet it was rescued. Three painstaking years of restoration transformed it. Owners Iftekhar Ahsan and Chris Chen spearheaded this project. Conservation architect Akhil Ranjan Sarkar and scenographer Swarup Dutta breathed new life into the building. They retained its classical architecture. Wooden beams were replaced with iron ones. Windows were repaired with matching frames. Even bakelite switches were custom-ordered from Delhi.
The Calcutta Bungalow isn’t just a hotel. It’s a museum showcasing vintage charm. Antique iron chairs a cane couch and Santhal dolls adorn the Baithakkhana. A brass Pan Dani sits proudly. These are meticulously preserved. The open courtyards offer slices of sky. The rooftop cafe plays old Bollywood melodies under the stars. It’s magical almost cinematic.
The staff enhances the experience. Their warm hospitality sets The Calcutta Bungalow apart. Simple beverages are complimentary. Manoranjan plays old Bengali melodies. Mr Mohammed Ayub Khan ensures guest comfort. He even stayed late to ensure a guest’s safe return.
The in-house restaurant Baro Mashe Tero Porbon offers innovative Bengali cuisine. Chef Alamgir uses fresh ingredients. The menu caters to various preferences including vegans. Dedicated addas gathering spaces maintain a Bengali tradition. The Addakhana a parlor invites conversation.
Each of the six rooms represents a Kolkata locality and profession. The Boipara room reflects the booksellers’ community. Memorial paving stones form the floor. An antique table and chandelier create an elegant area. A Remington typewriter still works. Large wooden framed mirrors and framed Bengali books adorn the walls.
