Lost amidst Milan’s sprawling embrace lies Corneliano Bertario. This little village offers a journey back in time. Corneliano Bertario is a fraction of Truccazzano municipality in the province of Milan. Its history stretches back to Roman times. A villa once stood here belonging to the Gens Cornelia.

Imagine life in this ancient settlement. Picture Romans walking the same paths we tread today. An important coin hoard dating back to the 3rd century AD was unearthed here. Two Roman tombs from the late first and early second centuries AD were also discovered. These finds whisper tales of Corneliano Bertario’s distant past.

In 1158, Federico Barbarossa’s army met with disaster near Corneliano Bertario. As they crossed the Adda River to besiege Milan, they suffered heavy losses. Over 200 soldiers perished in the river’s waters. Four years later Barbarossa returned to Corneliano Bertario. He camped here for a short time.

The medieval Borromeo Castle stands as a silent witness to Corneliano Bertario’s rich past. Construction began around 1385 on the site of the old Roman estate. Originally owned by the Visconti family, it was gifted to the Ospedale del Brolo. Later, it passed through the hands of the Olgiati, Bigli, Gallarati Scotti, and finally the Borromeo families. The oldest part of the Castle is the square tower with massive walls made from ancient building materials.

Barnabò Visconti, Lord of Milan, gifted land in Corneliano to the Ospedale Maggiore in 1385. The Bishop of Lodi even claimed the right to mine gold from the Adda River near Corneliano Bertario. Today, the castle serves as a venue for weddings meetings and corporate events. Its historic atmosphere lends a unique charm to any occasion.

Beyond the castle, Corneliano Bertario offers a tranquil escape into nature. The Borromeo Reserve spans 220 hectares. It was once the Borromeo family’s hunting preserve. Now, it is open to the public offering guided tours.

The landscape here is a mosaic of agricultural land and ancient woodland. Wetlands formed by the Adda River’s old channels provide a habitat for diverse wildlife. Corneliano Bertario’s beauty has made it a popular location for commercials and movies.
