How did Zamrud Khan, an Afghan noble, end up with such a legacy here in Delhi? Welcome to the Zamrudpur Tomb. This monument whispers tales of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the Lodi dynasty’s influence.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Sikandar Lodi ruling Delhi between 1489 and 1517. During his reign, Zamrud Khan served as a noble in his court. Impressed by his service, Sikandar Lodi granted Zamrud Khan the estate of Kanchan Sarai. The estate was later renamed Zamrudpur in his honor. It is said that Zamrud Khan then constructed this tomb. It was to mark his family’s presence and power in the region.

The Zamrudpur Tomb itself reflects Lodi architectural style. It is a square building constructed on a raised plinth. The plinth measures approximately 6.85 square meters. A hemispherical plastered dome crowns the tomb rising from an octagonal drum. Look closely at the inverted lotus cresting. It is a signature Lodi design element.

Twelve pillars of local grey stone support the domed roof. Notice their carved bases and capitals. Originally, a red sandstone chajja ran over these capitals. Above that, a grey stone frieze displayed battlements and kalasa motifs. These motifs crown the roof and the dome’s octagonal drum. Inside, the ceiling once featured ornamented niches and incised work. Today, remnants of its artistic ornamentation remain.

The exquisite plasterwork medallions are especially beautiful. Find them inscribed on the underside of the large dome. They represent some of the most elaborate artistry of the period.

The pillars are built of dressed stone. The domed roof uses random rubble masonry finished with plaster. This combination of materials shows the construction techniques of the time.

Once a proud monument, the Zamrudpur Tomb now faces challenges. Urban development encroaches on its space. Buildings surround it limiting its visibility. Some even use it as a waste disposal site. Despite these challenges, the Zamrudpur Tomb remains a significant historical landmark.

It reminds us of Zamrud Khan. He was the Afghan noble who left his mark on Delhi’s landscape. The tomb also is a window into the Lodi dynasty.
