Time has etched its stories onto the very stones of Molla Büyük Camii. Its presence here in Ankara’s Altındağ district is a testament to centuries past. Molla Büyük Camii stands as a beacon of history a mosque whose construction dates back to the 14th or 15th century. Its foundation rests upon sturdy pillars and marble a testament to the craftsmanship of its builders. Notice the exterior the brick walls punctuated by windows. These windows once illuminated the prayer hall bringing sunlight deep into the heart of Molla Büyük Camii.

The interior of Molla Büyük Camii is a treasure trove of details. The mihrab the niche indicating the direction of Mecca is breathtaking. Its lower section is adorned with exquisite tiles a symphony of blue white and green hues. Each tile bears a unique design. Above the tiles intricate stalactites hang from the ceiling a delicate counterpoint to the sturdy pillars below. A large pine pillar stands in the middle of the mosque supporting a marble capital. This is a central architectural element of Molla Büyük Camii.

Legend speaks of the mosque’s founder a man who faced great hardship from his wife. One day while waiting for the congregation the man was unusually late. The congregation discovered his wife tormenting him. They cursed her. Shortly after she fell dead. They say the founder’s grave was once in the mosque’s courtyard. Sadly that grave no longer exists.

Molla Büyük Camii wasn’t always a mosque. It began as a small prayer house mescit. It only became a full-fledged mosque in 1941 when a wooden minbar a pulpit from which the imam leads prayers was added. The minbar is made of wood a significant feature of the mosque. Even today Molla Büyük Camii continues its vital role in the community a place of worship and reflection. It stands as a beautiful example of Ottoman architecture a silent witness to Ankara’s rich past. The mosque has been renovated several times. This ensures the beauty of the Molla Büyük Camii continues to inspire awe in visitors for centuries to come.
