Hidden in plain sight, the Werner Blumenberg Plaque tells a tale of defiance. This plaque, right here on Spilckerstrasse, commemorates a man who dared to resist the rising tide of Nazism. Werner Blumenberg, a journalist and local editor for the Social Democratic newspaper “Volkswille,” lived here from 1928 to 1933. He wasn’t just reporting the news; he was actively shaping it. Blumenberg became a key figure in the “Socialist Front,” one of the largest Social Democratic resistance groups. He used his position to prepare the local SPD for the looming threat, even acquiring weapons in anticipation of the struggle. Blumenberg wasn’t content with passive resistance. He penned flyers criticizing the SPD’s approach, urging for stronger action. After the Labor Union House was occupied in 1933, he meticulously documented the political turmoil, distributing copies to trusted SPD members. Together with Franz Nause and Willy Wendt, Blumenberg forged the Socialist Front into a disciplined resistance group. They published the “Sozialistische Blätter,” a clandestine leaflet that reached up to a thousand readers, spreading their message of defiance. The Gestapo, however, tightened its grip. In the summer of 1936, an informer infiltrated the group. Blumenberg, sensing the imminent danger, fled to Holland in the dead of night. He never returned to Germany, living in exile until his death in Amsterdam in 1965. The Werner Blumenberg Plaque stands as a testament to his courage, a reminder of the quiet acts of resistance that often go unsung.
