Ever wondered why so many French millionaires choose to live just across the border? We are standing in Néchin. This charming village holds a secret. It is a tale of taxes and fortunes.

Néchin is a district of Estaimpuis. It sits in Hainaut province in Wallonia, Belgium. It is right near the French Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Until 1977, Néchin was its own municipality.

Néchin’s story took an interesting turn. It became a haven for wealthy French individuals. Why? Belgium’s tax laws are very appealing. They are especially advantageous for those with high earnings from stocks or capital gains. France’s laws are not as favorable.

The Mulliez family recognized this benefit early. They own the Auchan hypermarket chain and Decathlon sports stores. They invested in properties in Néchin. In 2012, the spotlight shone even brighter. Gérard Depardieu, the famous actor, planned to buy a house here.

Néchin’s appeal goes beyond just tax benefits. Its location is perfect. It is very close to the Lille Métropole metropolitan area. This proximity offers both tranquility and easy access to city life.

Néchin’s history stretches back centuries. It was once known as Ennechin and Ennechin-la-Royère. The name Néchin means new domain.

During World War II, German soldiers were driven out by American forces. This event took place on the Rue de l’Institut.

The village also had a seigneury. It was called the Royère, named after the Château de la Royère.

Néchin boasts a beautiful church. It is the Église Saint-Amand. Rebuilt after the destruction of World War I, it was consecrated by Mgr Gaston-Antoine Rasneur. Some parts of the old church remain. These include the 13th-century sculpted portal and the 1866 pulpit.

Take a look around. Imagine the stories these streets could tell. Néchin is more than just a village. It is a crossroads of culture and finance. It is a place where fortunes seek refuge. It is a testament to the ever-changing landscape of Europe.
