Consider this a journey back to 1641. This is where Westwood’s story begins long before it officially became Westwood. It was then part of Dedham, a precinct known as West Dedham.
Westwood wasn’t always Westwood. There was a debate about its name. The original suggestion was “Town of Nahatan.” But Nahant, another town, objected due to the similarity in names. To avoid conflict and speed up incorporation the name was changed to Westwood in 1897.

Westwood is home to several houses of worship. These include the First Baptist Church of Westwood and the First Parish of Westwood United Church. There is also Temple Beth David and St. Denis Parish. Westwood has some interesting trivia. It was a dry town until 2005. Restaurants can now obtain liquor licenses. Westwood is home to the oldest animal pound in the United States.
Westwood has produced notable people. These include acoustic engineer Leo Beranek and MMA fighter Kenny Florian. NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck also hails from Westwood.
