From a mountain of trash blooms Freizeitpark Marienfelde. This isn’t your typical amusement park with thrilling rides. Instead, it’s a testament to nature’s resilience. Freizeitpark Marienfelde sits on the southern edge of Berlin, in the Marienfelde district. For over 30 years, this 40-hectare expanse served as a dumping ground. Four million cubic meters of household waste were piled high, courtesy of the Berlin Stadtreinigungsbetriebe (BSR). In 1981, the landfill closed. Nature, ever persistent, began to reclaim the space.
The first section of Freizeitpark Marienfelde opened in 1980, even before the landfill fully closed. This early opening presented a unique challenge. Decomposing waste releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. So, alongside the budding park, a methane capture system was constructed. The captured gas served a practical purpose. It heated the nearby Stollwerck chocolate factory until 1995. Imagine the aroma of chocolate mingling with the scent of fresh grass. However, this arrangement wasn’t without its dangers.
In 2001, a methane explosion rocked the park. Freizeitpark Marienfelde closed its gates for four years. This closure allowed the ecosystem to flourish undisturbed. The BSR installed an improved gas capture system. It constantly monitors the entire park for methane leaks. When the park reopened in 2005, the captured gas was no longer used for heating. Instead, it’s safely flared off. While some argued for the park to remain closed, preserving the newly formed biotopes, Freizeitpark Marienfelde ultimately reopened.
Today, Freizeitpark Marienfelde offers a unique blend of recreation and nature. A 1.5-kilometer nature trail meanders through the park. Nine stations along the path offer insights into the diverse flora and fauna. You might spot newts, toads, and dragonflies at the foil pond. Or perhaps, catch a glimpse of a rare Ringelnatter snake. The “Alpengipfel”, or Alpine peak, the highest point in the park, offers panoramic views of Berlin and Brandenburg’s forests. From trash to treasure, Freizeitpark Marienfelde exemplifies the power of nature’s renewal.
