St. Thomas, one of Jesus’s twelve apostles, traveled to India, bringing with him a message of love and salvation. He landed in Muziris in 52 AD. He then traveled around southern India, including what is now Chennai. It was here, near this gate, on St. Thomas Mount, that tradition places both his ministry and his martyrdom. The Acts of Thomas, an apocryphal text, tell of his arrival in India. He encountered King Misdeus, whose family embraced Christianity. Enraged, King Misdeus led Thomas outside the city walls, to the hill where soldiers speared him. It is a dramatic story, passed down through generations. The exact details are shrouded in the mists of time. Yet the essence remains. A testament to the apostle’s unwavering faith and the power of his message. Later accounts claim the apostle’s remains were taken to Edessa. Some were later transferred to Ortona, Italy, and Chios, an island in the Aegean Sea. Today, San Thome Basilica in Chennai is said to house his tomb. However, other locations also claim to possess relics of the apostle, including the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Patmos, Greece, where his skull is believed to be. St. Thomas Gate isn’t just a gate. It is a tangible link to a story that stretches back nearly two thousand years.
