Beneath these unassuming surroundings lies Mito Jinja. It is also known as 彌刀神社. This Shinto shrine stands as a testament to centuries of local reverence.

Mito Jinja’s exact founding date remains a mystery. Records suggest its existence can be traced back to 762 AD. A major flood swept away the original shrine buildings that year. This was due to the breach of the Nagara dike on the Yamato River.

Despite its uncertain origins Mito Jinja appears in historical texts. It is listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho. This is a record of shrines from 927 AD. It identifies Mito Jinja as a small shrine within Kawachi Province.

From the Muromachi period Mito Jinja gained prominence. It became revered as the guardian deity of the local marketplace. This boosted its popularity among merchants.

The main building you see now was rebuilt in March 1991. This ensures the preservation of Mito Jinja for future generations.

Mito Jinja enshrines specific deities. These are Hayatsukitsuhiko-no-Kami and Hayatsukitsuhime-no-Kami. These gods are associated with harbors and river mouths. The name of the area, Tatsue, may come from “Ominato”. This means “big harbor”.

Local festivals enrich Mito Jinja’s cultural significance. Summer and autumn festivals mark the calendar. These celebrations draw crowds.

The shrine’s grounds once extended much further. They reached the Nagara River embankment. Mito Jinja served as a guardian of the local community. It also played a role in flood protection.
