“A world miracle” some call it. We’re standing before the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln. This kiln was built during the Ming Dynasty. Specifically, it was constructed in the Zhengde period, between 1506 and 1521 AD. That’s over 500 years ago. Amazingly, it’s still serving Foshan today.

Nanfeng Kiln isn’t just old. It’s a testament to the enduring pottery culture of Shiwan Town. The kiln has ingrained itself into the lives of the people here. For 515 years it has produced pottery.

The Ancient Nanfeng Kiln Cultural and Creative Zone houses this treasure. This zone is located in Shiwan Town. It is found within the Chancheng District of Foshan City in Guangdong province.

In the old days, locals referred to Shiwan’s kilns as firing ceramics stoves. There are various kinds of kilns. Dragon kilns are the most famous. Their shapes resemble huge flying dragons.

Nanfeng Kiln faces south. Banyan trees cluster at the back of the furnace. Cold wind occurs here in the summer. That is why it’s called “Nanfeng Kiln”. Nanfeng means south wind.

The zone offers much to explore beyond this kiln. It has become one of the best choices for an outing in spring. As you explore this antique pottery town you will see why.

There is the Shiwan Ceramics Museum for instance. You can also see Shiwan Doll Street. Or visit the International Ceramics Village. Do not forget the Ancient Stove Tree. This tree is also called the God Banya.

Another spot to see is the Lin’s Hall. The zone actually boasts nine blessing spots. These include the god of fire and Dragon Kiln. There is Yunyong Pavilion. Visit Scholars well. Take in Beidi Temple. See Tank Falls. The Chinese call it Da Gang Pu Bu. Find Wu Di Sheng Gen. Do not miss Lovesickness Desk. It is also called Xiangsī Tái.

Walk up to the kiln. Observe its unique structure inside the cave. Learn about the classic firing process. This is the perfect place to learn about local pottery culture. If you are lucky, you might see the kiln firing. It only runs twice a month.

Inside the park, you will also discover a pottery-themed gallery. See ancient car modeling and traditional Chinese calligraphy. Admire dressed-up clowns. Experience different facets of Foshan pottery culture.

Visit art shops on both sides of the allies. Explore pottery workshops. Find shops for Lingnan intangible cultural heritage. There are various kinds of creative decorations to discover.

Take a walk further into the park. Ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties surround you. It feels like travelling through time. In front of the buildings lies a blessing tree. It’s wrapped with numerous red ribbons. Hang up your ribbon. May all your wishes come true.

When you visit Nanfeng Kiln you are not simply seeing old pottery. You are experiencing a living piece of history. It is an enduring art form. It is a cultural legacy. It connects generations. It is a testament to human creativity.
