Built upon the ruins of Anhua Temple Anhua Building stands tall. It’s a nine-story residential building. This is Anhua Building a significant landmark in Beijing. Completed in 1960 it’s a testament to a bygone era. Anhua Building is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the collective life of a community.

Imagine life in Anhua Building in the early years. The building housed families from diverse backgrounds. Some were returnees from the countryside. Others were artists performers or officials. Apartment sizes varied. Some were small single-occupancy rooms. Others were larger two-room units shared by families. Monthly rent was remarkably affordable.

Initially Anhua Building lacked crucial amenities. A communal dining hall and small playground were eventually added. However private balconies were nonexistent. The lack of private spaces led to close-knit community interactions. Neighbors shared stories. Children played together in the shared spaces. A strong sense of community permeated Anhua Building.

The building’s design reflects typical socialist architecture. Its large central courtyard provided shared communal space. Inside each floor boasted five stairwells. These connected the apartments and communal areas. The hallways and apartments were adorned with simple yet beautiful tile work.

Over time Anhua Building underwent changes. Communal water faucets became individual apartment units. New plumbing systems improved sanitation. The building’s surroundings also evolved. Many schools and community centers were built nearby. Anhua Building remained a significant part of the neighborhood’s social fabric. Even today its residents maintain a strong community spirit. The stories whispered within its walls still echo. Anhua Building a piece of Beijing’s living history.
