The donkey or horse-driven rotary mill dates back to the 4th century BC. It is believed it originated in Carthaginian Sardinia. Evidence of this lies in two Carthaginian animal-powered millstones. They were crafted from red lava and discovered in a 375–350 BC shipwreck near Mallorca. The mill technology spread to Sicily and Italy by the 3rd century BC. The Carthaginians used hand-powered rotary mills as early as the 6th century BC.
