Picture this: a tree-lined street, elegant homes with welcoming porches, a sense of timelessness that whispers of a bygone era. Welcome to Woodland Heights, a charming neighborhood tucked away in the heart of Houston. Founded in 1907 by the William A. Wilson Realty Company, Woodland Heights was designed as a modern, upscale, yet affordable community for middle-class families. The neighborhood offered a haven from the bustling city center, with wide streets and spacious front yards. Residents could easily commute downtown via the electric streetcar line, enjoying the peace and quiet of their leafy neighborhood. Woodland Heights was innovative for its time, boasting a modern water system, electricity, gas, and telephone lines. It even had fire hydrants, a luxury not found in many Houston homes at the time. To showcase the neighborhood’s charm, Wilson published a magazine called “Woodland Heights,” filled with photographs and floor plans of the elegant homes. The magazine described streets lined with trees and “miles of the finest cement sidewalks.” In the 1960s and 1970s, Woodland Heights experienced a decline as residents moved to newer suburbs. However, the neighborhood found its footing again in the 1980s, thanks to the hard work and dedication of committed residents who worked to revitalize it. With the reinstatement of deed restrictions, the neighborhood’s unique character was preserved. Today, many homes in Woodland Heights still reflect that original charm and elegance, a testament to the vision of its founder and the spirit of its residents. As you walk through its tree-lined streets and admire its stately homes, take a moment to imagine the families who once called Woodland Heights home and the rich history woven into its very fabric. Today, Woodland Heights is a thriving community that celebrates its past while embracing a bright future, a testament to the power of community and the timeless allure of this charming Houston neighborhood.
