Hachio Myohoji Temple is linked to two significant figures. Legend says that Prince Shotoku founded it. Later the temple became home to Keichu a renowned Edo period scholar.
Keichu lived here from 1679 to 1690. During this time Hachio Myohoji Temple became a hub for studying ancient Japanese culture. Keichu dedicated himself to studying national learning. His efforts earned him recognition as a pioneer in the field.
Keichu’s father served Aoyama Daizo Okiharu a lord of the Niikazaki domain. He was compensated with 250 koku. Keichu was born in Niigata in 1640 as his third son. At age eleven he entered the priesthood.
Keichu initially pursued studies at Mount Koya. Later he resided at Hachio Myohoji Temple. Here he devoted himself to national learning. Keichu received patronage from Tokugawa Mitsukuni. Because of this support he completed the famous Manyo Daisho. He also completed numerous other works.
However tragedy struck in 1690. Keichu’s mother passed away at Hachio Myohoji Temple. This event prompted him to move to Enjuan Temple in Terada. He lived until 1701 when he died at the age of 62.
In 1949 the grounds of Hachio Myohoji Temple were designated as a historical site by Osaka Prefecture. This recognizes the temple’s link to Keichu.
Interestingly Hachio Myohoji Temple once fell into decline around 1751. However the priests Gesshu Hogen and Shangai Kuten revived it. They promoted the worship of Daikokuten. Daikokuten is a deity of wealth.
The temple regained popularity. Locals even said “For temples in the south it is Imagumi. For temples in the east it is Imazato’s Daikoku.” Hachio Myohoji Temple became known for attracting large crowds of worshippers.
Today you can find Keichu’s memorial tower and his mother’s grave on the grounds of Hachio Myohoji Temple. Hachio Myohoji Temple is more than just a temple. It’s a monument to scholarship and devotion.
