Lost in the depths of the Pacific Ocean lies the USS Gudgeon a submarine with a story etched in bravery and sacrifice. The USS Gudgeon War memorial stands as a poignant reminder of her service. This memorial honors the crew of the USS Gudgeon (SS-211). She was a Tambor-class diesel-electric submarine. The USS Gudgeon was the first American submarine to sink an enemy warship in World War II.

The USS Gudgeon served with distinction. She completed eleven war patrols. The submarine sank 14 enemy ships totaling over 71372 tons. That placed her 15th on the honor roll of American submarines. Her accomplishments earned her the Presidential Unit Citation. The USS Gudgeon also received the American Defense Service Medal the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

But the USS Gudgeon’s story is not without tragedy. On her twelfth war patrol in April 1944 she vanished. She was declared lost with all hands. Some believe she was sunk near the Maug Islands. Others suggest a Japanese attack southeast of Iwo Jima. The exact circumstances remain shrouded in mystery.

The USS Gudgeon’s legacy lives on. A later submarine was named in her honor. The USS Gudgeon (SS-567) served until 1983. She was then transferred to the Turkish Navy. Today this memorial stands not only as a tribute to the lost submarine but to all who served during World War II. The brave men of the USS Gudgeon embody the spirit of sacrifice and courage.
