Before us stands the Lycee du Parc Imperial a testament to Nice’s rich past. This isn’t just any school. It’s a building steeped in history a place where the echoes of emperors and scholars mingle.

Originally the luxurious Hotel Imperial it opened in 1902. Designed by the Polish architect Adam Dettloff this magnificent structure welcomed wealthy European vacationers. Among its esteemed guests was the Russian Imperial family themselves. They stayed here between 1860 and 1890 enjoying the grandeur of the Riviera.

The hotel boasted incredible amenities for its time. Think hydraulic elevators and running hot and cold water. Even the tennis courts were impressive enough to attract the legendary Suzanne Lenglen for training.

World War I brought a change. The hotel became a hospital. After the war the Hotel Imperial faced financial troubles. By 1920 it closed its doors.

But its story didn’t end there. In 1926 the city of Nice acquired the building. They transformed it into a school. First it was the Lycee Alexandre Mari an annex of the Lycee Massena. In 1948 it gained its own identity becoming the Lycee du Parc-Imperial.

Subsequent renovations between 1967 and 1968 altered the building significantly. The large mansard roof and its distinctive steeple disappeared. The south facade’s turrets were removed. The grand staircase and the rotunda dedicated to the Imperial family were demolished.

Today the Lycee du Parc Imperial stands as a major educational institution in Nice. It’s the largest lycee in the city boasting a wide range of programs including BTS degrees and teacher training. The building continues to serve its community. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. The story of this grand building is one of transformation. A story of emperors becoming students and a hotel becoming a school.
