“Did you know that Imperial Heights Community Church has roots stretching back to 1896?” That’s right. This wasn’t always the grand structure you see before you. It began as a small group. Twenty-seven people to be exact. They met in a hotel. A large hotel in Inglewood. This small band of believers formed an outreach ministry from Lordsburg and Tropico Brethren churches. They were part of the Church of the Brethren. A denomination deeply committed to peace and service. They believed in the teachings of Jesus Christ. This faith guided their lives. Their actions exemplified that commitment.
Imperial Heights Community Church grew. This growth was significant. In 1901 they built their first meeting house. The church continued to grow in Inglewood. Membership blossomed. Sunday school classes expanded. By 1918 they had their first full-time pastor. Rev William H Wertenbaker led the congregation. But growth necessitated another move. Inglewood changed. Urbanization replaced the rural landscape. The church needed more space.
The church purchased a site. This site was the corner of Imperial Highway and Saint Andrews Place. The year was 1947. Construction began immediately. A small chapel and fellowship hall were built first. This was completed in 1949. An educational wing and bell tower followed in 1951. The ambitious final phase of construction began soon after. The main sanctuary was a monumental undertaking. The church rallied its members. They raised an incredible amount of money. They exceeded their fundraising goals. The dedication of the main sanctuary happened in 1963.
Imperial Heights Community Church continued to evolve. Their ministry expanded. They served those who were often overlooked. In 1973 Rev Nolan Porter became the first African-American pastor. They offered early childhood education programs. They provided financial scholarships. Imperial Heights remains a vibrant hub. It offers spiritual guidance and community support. It carries on a legacy of faith service and growth. This legacy spans over a century. It continues to serve and inspire. The story of this church is one of unwavering faith. It is a story of enduring commitment to community.
