Can you imagine stepping back in time? The Dyckburg-Kirche in Münster tells a tale entwined with history, architecture, and even a little bit of mystery.

This quaint church, known as St. Mary’s Ascension, stands nestled within the Dyckburg district, just outside of Münster-Handorf. It was originally built in the 18th century by the renowned Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun, the same mind behind Münster Castle and the Erbdrostenhof. Schlaun, inspired by the Marian pilgrimage site Loreto in Italy, aimed to create a small but beautifully crafted chapel.

But Dyckburg’s history goes even further back. In the 15th century, the land was home to a moated castle, a strategic outpost for the Prince-Bishop of Waldeck. The castle even played a significant role during the Münster Rebellion, serving as a headquarters for the Bishop’s troops. Today, only fragments of this earlier structure remain, adding a layer of intrigue to the story.

Through the years, the Dyckburg-Kirche has undergone transformations. In the 19th century, a local nobleman enlarged the chapel, adding an octagonal dome and a neo-Baroque choir area, transforming it into the church we see today. The church was used as a parish church for decades, and since 2012, it has been a part of the St. Petronilla parish. It still serves as a place for regular worship.

You can walk around the Dyckburg-Kirche and picture its life as a castle, a chapel, and a church. It’s a site rich in layered history, a reminder of the past that continues to resonate in the present.
