Clutching a tattered map of Lombardy, I found myself drawn to the unassuming charm of Vizzolo Predabissi. This small comune, nestled approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Milan, whispers tales of ancient settlements and noble families. Vizzolo Predabissi wasn’t always known by its double-barreled name. Until 1863, it was simply Vizzolo. The addition of “Predabissi” connects the town to a fascinating figure from its Risorgimento past, nobleman Francesco Predabissi. He acquired the lands and assets of the former Calvenzano monastery in 1816, leaving his mark on the town’s identity. The heart of Vizzolo Predabissi beats around the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria in Calvenzano. This evocative structure stands as a testament to the town’s long history, incorporating remnants of Roman-era artifacts. It suggests a “vicus,” or rural village, possibly linked to the “gens Calvia” mentioned in the ancient “Tavola di Velleia” inscription. Imagine the bustling activity of a Roman settlement surrounding the very ground where the church now stands. Vizzolo Predabissi also holds traces of medieval power struggles. For centuries, the area was contested between Milan and Lodi. The donation of the Calvenzano feud to Cluniac monks by Milanese nobles Arialdo and Lanfranco solidified the town’s allegiance to Milan. This connection is further symbolized in Vizzolo Predabissi’s coat of arms, which features the cross of Milan. This emblem recalls a peace treaty from 1198 between Milan and Lodi. The treaty, according to Milanese historian Giorgio Giulini, ensured that Vizzolo would forever remain under Milan’s control. As you wander through Vizzolo Predabissi, remember the echoes of its rich past. From Roman settlers to medieval power plays and Risorgimento heroes, this small town holds a wealth of stories waiting to be discovered.
