Gazing up at this stern visage, can you feel the weight of history pressing down on us? This, my friends, is the Decebal Bust. It’s a tribute to a king, a warrior, a symbol of Dacian resistance against the Roman Empire. Decebal, whose name echoes through Romanian history, reigned between 87 and 106 AD. He united the Dacian tribes and led them in a fierce struggle against Roman expansion. A renowned military strategist, Decebal was praised even by his enemies for his cunning and bravery. The Roman historian Dio Cassius described him as “very skilled in war plans and skillful in carrying them out, knowing how to choose the occasion for attacking the enemy and to withdraw in time.” Decebal’s struggle, though ultimately ending in defeat, cemented his place as a national hero in Romania. This particular bust, located in Piața Unirii, offers a unique glimpse into this historical figure. It was created by the renowned sculptor Ion Bolocan and unveiled in December 2022. It stands as a reminder of Dacia’s rich past and the indomitable spirit of Decebal. So, as you admire the stern features of Decebal, remember the king who dared to defy an empire.
