In the heart of Denver, Christ Congregational Church stands as a testament to faith and community. The church’s story began in a humble setting. Its first service was held on March 16, 1952, at Kent School, miles away from its current location. Led by the Very Reverend Paul Roberts, Dean of Saint John’s Episcopal Cathedral, and assisted by the Reverend Gerrit S. Barnes, the congregation embarked on their spiritual journey. Christ Congregational Church wasn’t always known by its current name. It began as Saint John’s Mission of Saint John’s Episcopal Cathedral. The congregation quickly outgrew its temporary home. In July 1953, construction began at 2460 East Bates Avenue. The first service in the new building took place on January 17, 1954. A month later, on February 7, 1954, the structure was officially dedicated by the Right Reverend Harold L. Bowen, Bishop of Colorado. The church’s evolution continued. In November 1955, it transitioned from a mission of the Cathedral to a mission of the Diocese of Colorado. Bishop Joseph S. Minnis bestowed upon it a new name: Christ Chapel. The growth didn’t stop there. In May 1956, at the 70th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Colorado, Christ Chapel officially became Christ Church, a full-fledged parish. The Reverend Gerrit S. Barnes, who had been with the congregation since its inception, was ordained as its first Rector. The church’s physical space also evolved. A groundbreaking ceremony on December 11, 1960, marked the beginning of an expansion project. In October 1961, the congregation celebrated its first service in the new sanctuary. The official dedication, led by Bishop Minnis, followed later that month. Further expansions and renovations continued over the years. In 1978, an administrative wing with a chapel and conference room was added. The chapel was consecrated and named after St. Julian of Norwich. A significant expansion in 1990 brought a larger worship space, additional meeting rooms, and classrooms. Christ Congregational Church’s journey reflects a continuous growth in both its spiritual community and its physical presence. The church stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and dedication to serving its community.
