The Church of St Francis Xavier in Petaling Jaya wasn’t always this grand. Its dedication in 1957 marked a significant moment. It was one of only three Catholic parishes in Petaling Jaya then. The others were the Church of the Assumption and the Church of St Ignatius. This humble beginning grew into a beacon of Catholicism.

The Jesuits administer the Church of St Francis Xavier. This makes it unique in Malaysia. The Jesuits a Catholic order of priests and brothers built the church on land they owned. Their residence sits right next door. A hostel for Catholic students attending nearby Universiti Malaya once stood on the same grounds. Adjacent to the church is Catholic High School. A Chinese-type mission school founded and owned by the Marist Brothers.

Ahead of its Golden Jubilee in 2011 the Church of St Francis Xavier underwent a significant transformation. Major renovations included installing a stunning reredos. Large stained-glass panels depicting the Stations of the Cross were added. They beautifully illustrate the life of St Francis Xavier. Images of Christ the Good Shepherd and Mary Queen of Heaven surround a host of Jesuit saints and blesseds. The beauty is breathtaking.

Further renovations in 2016 brought modern conveniences. Air conditioning was added ensuring comfort for all worshippers. The Church of St Francis Xavier continues to serve as a center of faith and community. It serves as a vital part of the religious and cultural landscape of Petaling Jaya.
