“What if this building could talk?” That’s the question that comes to mind as we approach the Medical Science Building. This is not just a building. It is a cornerstone of medical education and research in China. It stands as a testament to a history of collaboration, innovation, and dedication to advancing medical science.

The Peking Union Medical College, or PUMC, which houses the Medical Science Building, boasts a rich history. It began in 1906 through collaborative efforts. Several missionary organizations and the Chinese government joined hands. Later, in 1915, the Rockefeller Foundation’s China Medical Board took over. This collaboration shaped PUMC into a world-class institution.

In 1917, PUMC was reorganized. The China Medical Board modeled the school after Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They followed the recommendations of the Flexner Report. This report set the standard for modern medical education in the US and Canada. The Medical Science Building has been a hub of activity. Generations of medical professionals have passed through its doors.

However, PUMC’s path wasn’t always smooth. In 1951, the PRC government nationalized it. They saw it as a symbol of U.S. cultural imperialism. The Ministry of Health took over operations. During the Cultural Revolution, the college closed. It reopened in 1979. It was then known as the “Capital University of Medical Sciences”. In 1985, it reclaimed its original name.

Today, the Medical Science Building continues to be part of PUMC’s legacy. PUMC is highly regarded. It consistently ranks among the top medical schools in China. It often secures the top one or two positions nationwide. This is according to the Best Chinese Universities Ranking.

PUMC has also gained international recognition. In 2024, its Biomedical Engineering program ranked 2nd globally. Its Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences program ranked 34th. The Academic Ranking of World Universities recognized these achievements.

The medical school houses several key laboratories. These include the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology. It also hosts WHO Collaborating Centers. These centers focus on various areas. They research health, traditional medicine, and hereditary diseases.

Many prominent figures have sought treatment at the PUMC Hospital. Its healthcare services are known for being technically advanced. PUMC has produced leaders in medicine worldwide. The Medical Science Building stands as a symbol of this legacy.

So, as you stand before the Medical Science Building, remember its story. It is a story of collaboration. It is a story of resilience. It is a story of dedication to medical excellence. It is a story etched into the very walls of this remarkable institution.
