“Black Tortoise Gate,” they called it. Today, we know it as the Gate of Divine Prowess. This gate stands as the Forbidden City’s northern passage. It has silently witnessed centuries of imperial life.

Built in 1420 during the Yongle Emperor’s reign, the Gate of Divine Prowess has a rich history. Its original name, “Black Tortoise Gate” soon changed. The Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi Emperor bore the name Xuanye. The character “Xuan” became taboo, so the gate was renamed.

The Gate of Divine Prowess served as the palace’s back entrance. Palace workers regularly used it. Also, women destined to become concubines entered the Forbidden City through this very gate. Imagine their hopes and fears as they crossed this threshold.

This gate is more than just a passage. It is a silent observer of history. It connects the imperial past with the present. While the Xuanwu Gate Incident sounds similar, it happened elsewhere. That palace coup occurred during the Tang Dynasty in Chang’an.

The Forbidden City itself is a marvel. Construction began in 1406 and was completed in 1420. Twenty-four emperors resided here. The city is a masterpiece of Chinese architecture with its layout based on fengshui.

Yellow roofs symbolize the emperor’s supremacy. Red walls and pillars represent fire, believed to bring a solid foundation. The Gate of Divine Prowess is a part of this grand design. It embodies the rich history and culture of China.

Beijing has been China’s capital for over 700 years. The Forbidden City stands as a testament to this long history. It is the largest palace in the world. It is also China’s best-preserved imperial palace.

Interestingly, birds cannot land on the roofs of the Forbidden City. The roofs’ steep slopes and glazed tiles prevent them from landing. This design keeps the palace clean. It also maintains its magnificent appearance.

The Gate of Divine Prowess stands as a reminder of the past. It has seen emperors rise and fall. It has witnessed countless events. As you stand before it, imagine the weight of history. Consider the countless lives that have passed through this gate. It is more than just a gate. It is a symbol of China’s enduring legacy.
