Perched high above Nice Falicon boasts breathtaking views. Falicon a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department offers a captivating glimpse into history. Its name possibly derives from a Celtic root related to “cliff” or “falcon” a fitting description for its elevated position.

Falicon’s history is richly layered. A charter from 1073 mentions the church of Saint-Michel de Barbalate nearby. A papal bull from Innocent IV reveals that the Saint-Pons Abbey of Nice owned half of Falicon including the Saint-Michel church. The Travacca family may have been involved in this ownership. The village’s history involves various noble families like the Marchesan and the Alaysiis. These families held sway over Falicon for centuries. Their influence is reflected in the village’s architecture and layout.

The 15th and 16th centuries witnessed a complex tapestry of ownership. The fief was divided among multiple co-lords. The Saint-Pons Abbey retained a portion. The Reinaldi family eventually acquired a significant share in the late 16th century. This resulted in a shared governance. Falicon’s past was marked by both prosperity and conflict. The Franco-Spanish War brought battles to its doorstep in 1746.

The 19th century saw a royal visitor Queen Victoria. She enjoyed tea on a square at Falicon’s entrance. This is commemorated by the “Queen’s Tea Square”. The arrival of water from the Vésubie canal in 1895 significantly improved the village life. A fountain next to the town hall and church celebrates this event.

Falicon’s charm lies in its medieval streets and stone houses. Its baroque church Notre-Dame de la Nativité built by Benedictine monks stands as a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. Other religious sites include the Sainte-Croix chapel and the Saint-Sébastien chapel. These sites enrich the cultural landscape. Falicon also has a fascinating pyramidal structure the Pyramid of Falicon which crowns the Ratapignata cave. This cave was discovered in 1803 by Domenico Rossetti an Italian writer. Today Falicon offers a tranquil escape from the bustle of nearby Nice. It is a testament to history and a tribute to the enduring beauty of the French Riviera.
