SACHE – Aldoar

In 1978, a group of friends, some connected to the arts and architecture, formed SACHE – Aldoar. They recognized a critical need for quality, affordable housing in Porto. Driven by solidarity and friendship, SACHE embarked on its first project. Here at SACHE – Aldoar, you see the result of their vision. The first phase, completed in 1988, is the large gallery-style block housing 54 apartments at the north end. Architect Manuel Correia Fernandes designed the entire complex. His distinctive use of reddish planes and earthy tones creates a unique visual appeal. Notice how these colors interact with the green, organic elements of the vegetation that has grown over the years. The second phase, finished in 1993, added 127 apartments with direct access and private patios. This phase comprises four sets of two blocks, running parallel across the site. SACHE – Aldoar continued to grow with a third phase in 1998, adding 64 more apartments in a similar style. A final phase, completed in 2011, added 32 apartments, completing the urban frontage and enhancing the overall integration of the complex. As you explore SACHE – Aldoar, you can sense the passage of time. The aged wood, the faded and sometimes broken brick, and the encroaching nature tell a story of a living community. The project received the Fernando Belaúnde Terry Special Prize in 2004, recognizing its architectural significance. SACHE – Aldoar is more than just housing.
